Living Life Richly on the Cheap #3

#3 Keeping your eye out for amazing deals

About a month ago, Danielle and I headed to the Morris furniture outlet store for their big clearance sale. We were looking for a dresser. We did not find a dresser but we did find a very nice dining room table top with two leaves that folds out from under the table for only $27.77. The MSRP for just the table top was $650. The only catch was it had no legs and a few minor scratches. We could not turn down 95% percent off, so we bought it in hopes of finding a set of pedestal legs some place else. About a week, later Danielle found a set of pedestal legs on Craigslist for $20.00, only 60 miles away. The legs are a slightly darker color than the table, but they work great. So including gas and tax we have an amazing dinning room table for about $65.

Since this item was not a necessity there are no savings just a total cost
Total Cost: including gas and tax about $65.
Extra Bonus: Bonding time with my father-in-law as we assebled the pedestal bases and the table top. Danielle has also been wanting a larger, solid wood table, and now she's got it!
Extra Hassle: Being pateint and searching.
Catch: We might have been stuck with either buying expensive pedestal bases or having a $27.77 table top with no legs.

Project Updates

Danielle and I have been busy working on projects in our new house. The major undertaking at the moment in removing the old torn wallpaper from the dining room. Man, that stuff was stuck on strong. Danielle and Rachel put many hours into it. I think I put about 30 minutes into it and had enough. Patrick helped me get the microwave installed. I'm been busy with other small but numerous tasks such as taxes and putting lights on and collecting old silver coins and maps. Lily has been busy learning to say mama, eating new foods, and attempting to crawl. Enjoy the pictures.

First post of '08

Looks like I have fallen a bit behind on posting this year. We ending 2007 with a New year's eve party at our house. There were near 20 people at our house and we had a great time hosting. Last week was my first night as T&T director for our Awana club at church. Danielle and I continue to be busy making our house a home. Lily has started to eat carrots and green beans. Soon she will start sweet potatoes. Yum, Yum. Here are a few pictures of Lily and our New Years Eve Party.

Christmas Break 2007

I'm using my time off between the holidays this year to continue to unpack from our move and do some repairs and improvements to our house. Here are a few highlights.
  • Replaced the transformer in the door bell.
  • Assembled a computer armoire so the computer can be in the living room.
  • Installing a new sink in the 1/2 bath. (Still a work in progress)
  • Hooked up water to the fridge (we have ice but no water from the dispenser)
  • Light the pilot light or the fireplace.
  • Got the Saturn in the garage and more junk to the basement.
  • Measured electric usage with my new Kill a Watt device. An excellent Christmas present from my dad.
  • Shopping at the outlet mall.
  • Having fun with Lily.
Here are a few more pictures.

Lily enjoyed helping us out.

We are now living in our home

As of Thursday night we have been living in our house. I'll be taking more pictures of the completed carpet later. But for now I have posted a few. We are in midst of a major Ohio snow storm complete with accumulations, rain, sleet and freezing rain so I need to leave for the apartment and get the last few things.

Home Owners Day 2-4

Day 2

Day two I drove to Columbus and Cincinnati to pick on a Washer, Dryer, Side by Side Fridge and an Oven. We used Creg's List list and saved a lot of cash. I was thankful to have my coworker Devon help me on the trip to Cincinnati. He also helped us rip out most of the carpet. My camera wasn't working so we didn't get any pictures.

Day 3

I'll let the picture do most of the talking.

We sold of house in Nicholasville just before the housing market really started to fall and then bought this house in a foreclosed *fire* sale. The house needs new paint and carpet and new lights/fans and a REALLY good cleaning. Here are the first pictures. I hope to keep track of our progress.

House!

If all goes according to plan we will be closing on a house by the end of the month. It was a bank owned property and was a very nice price. It backs up to a 10 acre park, in Xenia. I will need tons of paint and new carpet. Anyone want to come help paint?

28.9 Miles of Bike Path Fun

Xenia - London Bike Rail

On Saturday Danielle and I drove to London, Ohio to pick up a hutch. The hutch will serve as the baby's changing table & storage. Since we were all the way over in London and since London happens to be the end of the bike trail that runs from Xenia to Cedarville to South Charleston to London, I decided bike home all 28.9 miles. The trail was very nice and enjoyable. I was able to find 3 geocaches on the way home. The whole trip took me over 2 1/2 hours. The trail is mostly flat and parts are open and the wind was a factor to my disadvantage. I'm hoping someday to ride bike trail the 50+ miles from Xenia to Cincinnati. View a map of the trail, I road from the Blue Map Marker to the Green Bicycle in Xenia.
